Profile Series: Accountants Share Stories of Purpose in Action

4 min read

When you think of a career that positively impacts the world, accounting probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. But that couldn’t be further from the truth. Accounting is the backbone of nearly all organizations—whether it’s nonprofits, government agencies, or businesses—helping them grow so they can serve more people. It also helps develop future leaders who carry this mission forward.

Still not convinced? Hear from four accountants who use their skills to drive real impact.

Can you describe a project where your accounting skills improved a process, benefited a community, or addressed a specific challenge? What did this achievement mean to you?

👨🏻Name:

Andres V.

💼 Title:

Crowe IT Assurance Senior Staff (⬅️ What does this mean? They review and strengthen the dependability, security, and compliance of IT systems to mitigate risks.)

📍Location:

Texas

One of the most fulfilling projects I have been involved in was the establishment of ConNext Steps, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing essential resources like language classes, life skill workshops, and support networks to the Latino community.

Using my accounting and IT assurance skills, I was able to improve its operations, so that the nonprofit could continue growing and sustaining itself to serve more people. With my expertise, I provided direct feedback to the organization on selecting the most effective vendors and platforms for their needs.

For example, I introduced a new platform for streamlining volunteer management, class registrations, and event planning. Additionally, my knowledge of credit card security gave me tools to advise the organization on implementing a new primary donation platform. This led to a more secure and seamless donation process, protecting both the organization and its donors.

Getting to use my accounting skills to make a real difference in my community has been incredibly rewarding. This project helped me grow my problem-solving and decision-making abilities while reminding me why I chose accounting—to create real, lasting impact that uplifts others.

👩🏻Name:

Gina A., CPA

💼 Title:

Crowe Tax Senior Manager (⬅️ What does this mean? They manage the compliance, planning, and reporting of taxes.)

📍Location:

Florida

As a tax accountant, I often see and have to solve the challenges that new tax laws and regulations pose for our clients. In a recent change, I had to assess how these updates would significantly affect non-profit organizations, determine how to communicate the impact clearly, and help them stay compliant.

These laws often come with nuanced details—but that’s a key part of our role: “How do I explain this in a way my client will actually understand?” Tax analysis can be overwhelming, so I’m proud to make a meaningful impact by easing the burden for my clients as a knowledgeable and trusted resource.

👨🏻Name:

Rodrigo G., CAMS

💼 Title:

Crowe Financial Crime Consultant (⬅️ What does this mean? They help companies manage and comply with financial crime regulations and prevent and detect internal financial crimes.)

📍Location:

New York

Through one of the employee resource groups at Crowe, Adelante: Latinos Leading, I had the opportunity to get involved with ALPFA (Association of Latino Professionals for America), who provide networking and professional development opportunities. At ALPFA, I served as the Finance Lead for the Professional Mentorship Program (PMP), a mentor-mentee program for early career professionals to connect with career veterans.

The best part about participating in the PMP was being able to observe the deep impact that the program had on the individuals participating. Both mentors and mentees shared how transformative the experience was for them. Through the one-on-one sessions and in-person events, all participants saw some form of personal and career growth. Serving on the executive team gave me a big-picture view of the power of community.

👨🏻Name:

James T.

💼 Title:

Crowe Consulting Senior Manager (⬅️ What does this mean? They offer expertise to businesses in areas such as strategy development, risk management, process improvement, technology implementation, and more.)

📍Location:

Indiana

One of the most rewarding projects I’m currently working on involves helping a company identify opportunities to streamline operations for future growth. Over time, their system became difficult to manage, costly to maintain, and a barrier to scalability. I assessed their current system to help them shift from a burdensome system to one that truly enables their business.

What makes this achievement meaningful to me is seeing the direct impact on people—the relief when workflows become smoother, the confidence users gain in their system, and the excitement leadership has when they realize their technology can support future growth instead of holding them back. This project reminds me why I enjoy consulting: solving tough technical challenges while making technology work for the people who use it every day.

When we say accounting is about more than just numbers, we’re not just talking. The proof is in these stories: accounting is about impact. Whether it’s funding vital programs, helping businesses and communities understand finances, or empowering future leaders, accountants play a critical role in building a better world.
